2024: A Dynamic Year in the Temp Market

As we approach the end of the financial year (EOFY), it's an ideal time to reflect on the recruitment landscape and trends that have shaped 2024 so far. Here at Harbour City Recruitment (HCR), we’ve been closely monitoring market shifts and adapting our strategies to meet the evolving needs of our clients and candidates.

1. Increased Demand for Hybrid Skills

Businesses are looking for office support staff who can do more than just traditional admin tasks. There’s a growing demand for temps with hybrid skills, such as proficiency in digital tools, project management, and customer service. Candidates who can wear multiple hats are highly sought after.

2. The Critical Role of Flexibility

The flexibility of temporary office support staff is indispensable in today's dynamic business environments. Companies seek temps who can swiftly adapt to changing needs and workflows. Ensuring flexibility involves thorough screening, comprehensive onboarding, clear communication, supportive environments, regular performance monitoring, and offering incentives like recognition and career development opportunities.

3. Focus on Employee Well-being

Employers are increasingly aware of the importance of employee well-being, which extends to temporary staff. Providing a supportive and inclusive work environment has become a priority, ensuring that temps feel valued and integrated into the team, even for short-term assignments.

4. Tech-Savvy Candidates in Demand

The integration of new technologies in the workplace means that office support staff need to be tech-savvy. There’s a high demand for candidates who are proficient in the latest office software, data management tools, and communication platforms.

5. Competitive Compensation and Benefits

To attract top talent, companies are offering competitive compensation packages and benefits, even for temporary roles. This includes not only attractive hourly rates but also perks like flexible working hours, professional development opportunities, and a positive work culture.

6. Increase in Salaries and Superannuation

In 2024, we’ve seen a notable increase in salaries and superannuation contributions for office support roles. Superannuation has increased to 11.5%, and temps are now looking for a minimum salary range of $65K-$75K. This rise is partly due to inflation and the growing recognition of the valuable contributions made by office support staff. Competitive pay rates and increased superannuation are becoming standard, ensuring that these roles remain attractive and can attract top-tier candidates.

7. Update on Working Holiday Visas from the UK

A significant update for 2024 is the increase in approvals for working holiday visas from the UK, with 22,000 approvals this year. Additionally, UK visa holders no longer need to complete regional work to apply for second and third-year extensions. They are also now allowed to work at the same company for more than the previously limited six months. This change provides greater stability and opportunities for UK working holidaymakers in Australia, making it an excellent time for businesses to tap into this talent pool.

One of the challenges we've faced is dealing with clients who have unrealistic hiring criteria. It's essential for companies to balance their expectations with the current market reality to ensure successful and timely hires. Our team at HCR continues to work closely with clients to refine their requirements and find the best-fit candidates.

Looking ahead, we anticipate continued growth in office support roles and remain committed to providing top-notch recruitment services. We're excited about the opportunities that the second half of the year holds and look forward to helping more clients and candidates achieve their goals.
